Best of the Web: Cycling support

(Cycling) is a great way to combine business and pleasure. I can’t say I’ve often enjoyed driving to work, but a spin on the bike always seems to brighten the day. Read story.

Good work, Mary and Glenn (Barber). People need to be more concerned with the birds’ habitat and less concerned with speeding through the area. Our country is beautiful … what’s the rush?

I got your rec center. It’s called Steamboat. Two ski mountains, one of the top Nordic facilities in the world, endless hiking and biking trails with not so bad views, world-class fishing, four golf courses, sweet tennis facility, a well done Core Trail, killer kayak and rafting rapids, all kinds of camping … sick longboarding roads…gnarly tubing … plenty of county roads to don your cycling tights…and a bunch of intramural sports and activities, etc. And I’m sure I missed a few recreational opportunities … we need a rec center about as bad as we need more rain.

Good news on the subdivision and the farmers market. However, what is the purpose of a liquor license at a farmers market? Read story.

Best of the Web: Take time at the wheel
Sunday, May 17, 2009
We can all just take a little more time to be aware of our surroundings before proceeding from a stop or yield sign. Just today, I saw a driver stopped at Third Street to turn right onto Lincoln: the driver never once looked right, only looked left for his opportunity to turn right onto Lincoln. Meanwhile, a pedestrian was just crossing in the crosswalk from the bank toward the post office, when the driver turned onto Lincoln, barely missing the pedestrian. …And with the nice weather, we have more pedestrians and bicyclists that we, as drivers, need to be aware of. Please, take a minute and look both ways repeatedly before proceeding.

Best of the Web: Base area plans
Sunday, May 3, 2009
Great job. It is awesome to see a group of citizens come together to make an intelligent study of what is possible and find a prudent way to proceed with the base area improvements. This is good for Steamboat now and sends a strong message about where we are going. I will look forward to seeing the council make a well-considered choice from this group’s recommendations in May.

I have no idea what today’s child has to be depressed about. They have access to a good education if they want one. There is opportunity out there if you so desire; iPods aplenty. My parents grew up as young adults during the Depression. They were both from large families. They never talked about those times as the end of the world. The families hung together and made the best of it. We now are all paying for gorging ourselves on materialism. You know at some point, a local used to own all that expensive land that is Steamboat and at some time, a local cashed it in. A community is only a sum total of its members, rich and poor. Get too greedy, and we all end up sloshing around in the muck.

Read story.Best of the Web: Vote on 700
Sunday, April 5, 2009
A proposed development the size of (Steamboat) 700 should be put to a vote. Yes, it will inconvenience the developers, but if the majority of our residents feel that Steamboat does not see a need for this amount of housing and the impacts that it will create for all of us, i.e increased traffic, then it should not be built. We will all have to live with the impacts of such a development, and it would be easier to accept if it goes to a vote first. I was not in favor of Wal-Mart but since the majority of residents wanted it, I was more willing to accept it. The inconvenience to the town, if 700 gets built, goes far beyond the inconvenience of waiting for a vote to the developer.

The real sad thing here is that people need to be “educated” about not destroying the Yampa. Don’t throw trash in the river and obey the rules. Seems pretty simple to me. I think it says more about our society than anything else. (It’s a) “rules apply to everybody else but me” attitude. Read story.

I cannot understand why anyone would think that new developments should not be accompanied with water. If they are adding to the demand, then they should add to the supply so that the supply does not run out.

Sunday, March 8, 2009
There is little doubt that smaller classes generally are better than larger classes, but even here, the school district has far less to spend per student than the elite private schools.
