Steamboat Springs resident George Hine rides his bike home from work Thursday afternoon. Hine, who works for Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services is able to commute to and from work on his bike — his effort is one of the reasons Steamboat is a bike friendly community.

Steamboat Springs firefighter Matt Newman sprays water on the tires and breaks of a semitrailer after a two-car accident on Rabbit Ears Pass along U.S. 40 Friday afternoon. Despite the ugly scene, Routt County sheriff officers said there were only minor injuries. The accident backed up traffic in both directions.


Steamboat’s Westin Cofer spins before hurling the discus during the state meet at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood on Friday. The senior’s best distance, 133-2, earned him a 15th-place finish, but was not enough to qualify him for finals.

Spring has exploded in Steamboat Springs, and the proof can be found on the many flowering crab apple trees in downtown Steamboat Springs.


Steamboat Springs rancher Jim Stanko cleans up a pasture on his ranch just off Routt County Road 33 west of Steamboat. Stanko and other area ranchers will have to deal with the rising cost of fuel and business this summer.
