Friday was the first day for new staff at Hayden School District. They are, from left: Sarah Burkhart, who teaches the combined fourth- and fifth-grade class; Keri Luedtke, fourth grade; Zach Wuestewald, second grade; Greg Johnson, middle school special edu­cation and volleyball coach; Annette McCurdy, middle school math; Sara Magas, temporary guidance counselor for middle and elementary schools; Ashley Manning, seventh- and eighth-grade English; and Stacey Zenker, seventh- and eighth-grade social studies.


Bud Werner Memorial Library volunteer Peg Wearsch shelves new books Friday at the library’s new addition. On Thursday, a semitrailer containing 10,000 new items arrived at the library. Last weekend, 150 volunteers worked to move the old items from the existing library to the addition. The library is scheduled to reopen Sept. 12.


Kimberly Zacher rides Friday afternoon in Steamboat Springs to train for Sunday’s Steamboat Springs Triathlon. The fourth annual triathlon will start at Lake Catamount at 8 a.m. More than 600 athletes are expected for the swimming, biking and running race.


Members of Routt County Search and Rescue save a man who fell in the Fish Creek Falls area in 2004. The Search and Rescue responds year-round to emergencies and is holding a fundraiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Olympian Hall.


Seven Hayden youths won Young Reader Awards through a program at the Hayden Public Library. Five received their awards from Library Director Ana Lash, left, on Friday afternoon. Recipients included Michelle Gutierrez, top left, Abi Velasquez, top right, and bottom, from left, Matthew Irvine, Shjon Petersen and Daylon Frentress. Trent Gabel and Thalia Carbajal also won awards.


Friends of Tyler Johnson Hannah, left, and Kenda Thvedt, display some of the Garth Brooks and Joe Theismann memorabilia that will be up for auction during a silent auction from 2 to 7 p.m. today during a fundraiser at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. Proceeds will benefit Tyler, a Steamboat Springs youth who is recovering from an undiagnosed disease.
