City officials are accepting nominations for the Steamboat Springs Heritage Award, which was first awarded to John Fetcher in 2000 and recognizes outstanding community citizenship in human service, open space preservation and community character. Jim Stanko cuts a fresh bale of hay with an assist from an eager cow at his ranch just west of Steamboat Springs. As of Friday, seven of 85 cows on the Stanko Ranch already had given birth to calves.

Geese swim through the icy waters of the Yampa River last weekend. Warming temperatures have brought the birds back to the area, but the ice in the water is still a reminder that we are still in winter’s grip.

Michael Morse won the dual moguls competition Sunday at the U.S. Freestyle Championships at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah. Morse, a former Steamboat Springs resident, also won Saturday’s moguls event.
