On Lanning, council part ways (anonymous)

Big mistake. So, next November, perhaps we'll get four new Council members who have the best interest of the entire community and the wisdom to understand the workings of municipal government. Or maybe, just maybe, the current Council can learn something from this huge blunder.
A message to some of these new members - don't allow the power seeking few to mislead you again.

It's really too bad that Council might even be considering firing Mr. Lanning. Now is the time they need him most. My research indicates that Mr. Lanning has strong experience in budget management in tough economic times. Think hard Council.

Community support has a long history with many groups in Steamboat Springs and quite frankly is the only reason they continue to exist. Many, if not most of these organizations, express “entitlement” to City funds year after year. Why should the City have to decide between providing the appropriate level of essential services or doling out funds to groups who have long learned how NOT to support themselves. In many cases, there appears to be duplication of efforts without any evident results of whatever it is they are supposed to be doing!
It's time for Council to “just say no” and stop enabling these groups.

The majority of the new Council are novices at how a municipal government operates. Lanning has over 20 years of experience in managing city government. Most of the new Council were endorsed, supported and now apparently directed by the development community. What's wrong with this picture?

I just thought that was the cruelest punt in a long time,” Myller said about auditing contractors’ estimates at a May 10 City Council retreat.

Please tell me what is cruel about auditing contractors to insure they are actually paying the voter approved taxes? Are they afraid that these audits may actually reveal that taxes have long gone unpaid? Does Council believe that their special interest group is exempt from enforcement? Should the community be denied the revenue needed to support the additional infrastructure brought on by new development and construction? Does it surprise anyone that real estate signs and contractor audits provided the catalyst to this debate?
It is no secret that most of the new Council members were backed by the development and contracting factions. However, as officials elected to represent the entire community, their duty is to make decisions that are good for all not just the select few.
Mr. Lanning brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership, courage to make long overdue changes and a strong commitment to our community. Should this Council opt to fire him, Steamboat Springs will have a very difficult time replacing him with anyone less than mediocre, at best. Our community deserves better than that.

Brittney, you are so right. Please tell me what experience Council has in running the daily operations of the City. Council is elected to be the voice of the entire community and to set policy. We appreciate their willingness to do that job because many times it is thankless. We encourage Council to utilize Mr. Lanning's experience and courage to continue to make the necessary changes that have long been ignored. Should this Council decide to fire Mr. Lanning, who but the less qualified candidates would be willing to make the committment to move to Steamboat and work for such a group of elected officials? Is that who we want at the helm of the City while such tremendous growth and change is occuring? Do we want a puppet of Council or do we want strong leadership who can assist Council carry out their mission.
I encourage every citizen of Steamboat Springs to attend the very next Council meeting to voice your opinion.

Steamvent, are you a City employee? Do you have first hand knowledge of staff morale? Second and third hand information, as we all know, is diluted and distorted each time it is repeated. Having had frequent interaction with City Hall and Mr. Lanning, I have seen the change in staff attitude and morale, which can be attributed to Mr. Lanning's positive changes and decisions.

The two issues described in the article are not new to this community. Real estate signs in the right of way has been a problem for many years. And now contractors, who've been informed numerous times that their records are subject to audit are complaining because of a “heavy handed letter?” Should we as taxpayers allow certain members of the community to not pay their due just because our current City Council is pro development? Perhaps those members of City Council who are outraged by this action, should question their motives. Is this Council afraid that Mr. Lanning will guide them to do their job, which is to safe guard the interests of the entire community and not just a select group?
Council, what are you trying to pull on our community?

The west end of the bike path along with a pedestrian bridge is currently under construction, leading directly to this location. Kids can skateboard there very easily from Howelsen or the Stockbridge/Community Center location (note: bus stop!) If you want enough space to build an adequate skatepark, then it will have to be a little further from the center of town but certainly not inaccessible for kids.
Perhaps the meeting with the City and skatepark designer provided more insight into the site selection process and how the local volunteer skatepark group collaborated with identifying the site.
