On Road striping set for Wednesday

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Doug Monger the Commisioner from the Steamboat district, Nancy represents south Routt and Diane west Routt? Assumming most of the CR 36 users are from SS shouldn't you be directing your flack at Doug? I saw Nancy over the holiday and told her I supported her decision. She indicated she had heard many such comments. Fortunately Doug and Nancy have been around long enough to know what is best for RC.

On Rob Douglas: Citizenship in decline?

Citizenship in decline? Is this a 'True or False' or 'Mutiple Choice" question? If it's 'Multiple Choice' and the choices are; a)People are stuck in traffic and/or can't find a place to park so they don't attend meetings, b) people can't read the newspaper while walking/driving between two or three jobs and therefore are not well informed about issues, c) people do read the newspaper and are still not well informed about issues, or d)people are afraid of bumping into (or being bumped into) by RqDq, then my choice is e)all the above. If this is a 'True or False' question then my answer is False, there are many other ways of participating beyond the prying eyes of the author.

On Salazar critical of Big Oil

ditto bigdog-this guy IS scary. He makes RqDq look like he has a brain. The sagging dollar is causing Wall Street speculators to buy oil futures. The supply problems are minimal by comparison. Foriegn investors are buying leases and drilling all over the US. It has long been the policy of the US to use up foriegn oil first and when that oil becomes too expensive to recover develop our own reserves. We also have numerous enviormental restrictions that hamper developing leases here. Salazar should go back to picking lettuce!

ss, you are right-you just don't get it. Most people don't hate cyclists, they hate their behavior on public roads. Motorists that pay the bulk of building and maintaining public roads have to be registered and licensed. Driving is a privelege not a right. Why shouldn't cyclists that are the cause of so much controversy be held to the same standard?

ss & BM, FYI I had one of the first 10 speed bikes in Routt Co. in the early '70s and quit riding it then because I deemed it too risky. I would venture that traffic has increased 10 fold since then. I now drive aproximately 20,000 mi. a year (90% in Routt Co.) and have been doing so for the past 20 years. My work takes me all over the county. I am well aware of all the hazards of driving here from 'black ice' to livestock on the highway and none of them cause me as much concern as the irresponsible cycilists. As it now stands cyclists know very well that there is little chance they will be caught and prosecuted for breaking the law. If they were made to wear shirts with a license plate number on the back they could be held accountable for their infractions. I do have a "clue" and I realize this would not solve all traffic issues but it would definitly be a step in the right direction. The comment that all road users should be registered shows how immature and anal you are. Your attitude seems to be 'since everyone else breaks the law- why shouldn't we'.

On Rob Douglas: C.R. 36 becomes Taylor Way

Once again the Pilot's chief navigator and moral compass, RqDq (not to be confused with it's predessor R2D2) has lost it's way. The commissioners HAVE done the right thing to promote safety on CR36. Decreasing the shoulder width encourages cyclists to ride single file and gives more room for motorists to pass cyclists without having to cross into oncoming traffic. It is clear that the programmers have made little progress improving the RD series and that the entire experiment should be scrapped.

The reason cyclists are singled out is because of their blatant and flagrant breaking of the law and disrespect for motorists and pedestrians. Cyclists are often moving so fast in town it is somtimes impossible to anticipate what they are going to do. Out of town they move so slow going up hills that they create serious hazards for motorists. Yesterday I witnessed 3 cyclists riding on the WRONG side of the road, 1 blow a stop sign and a famially of 5 riding on the sidewalk. Driving is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. If cyclists were serious about solving some of these problems they would support registering bicycles and licencing riders!

I used to think that cyclist wore those goofy looking helmets to protect their brains. Now I realize they are completly useless.

On Cyclists spurned

Public roads are transportation corridors meant for getting people and goods from one place to another. They are not 'recreation areas'. With all the recreation oppurtunities available in Routt Co. (including mountain biking on forest roads) it is incomprehensible why anyone would endanger themselves and others by getting their 'excercise' on narrow mountain roads. Either they get paid very well for all the advertising they do or they just have a death wish!

Reminds me of when County comissioner Billy Mack was recalled. Just one question. If fetuses are human beings why aren't miscarriages given funerals?
