Looks like the county commissioners are taking their tactics training from the Steamboat Springs School Board…..constituents don't matter, their decision was already made.

Palmway,
If you have attended any community meetings over the years with Crossan or heard her speak to teachers, parents and administrators the way I have, you would realize she has an agenda that doesn't honor the professional educators in the business. I knew someone was going to give me flack for this, and if you want to debate it further, so be it. I am tired of losing decent people (not just Knezevich) because of Crossan's agenda. She speaks in absolutes, gives ultimatums and discounts the legitimacy of the great education students can get at our high school. Her hit list has been extensive since she first ran against Pat Gleason and Jerry Kozatch a few years ago.
Perhaps your lesson of respect for others needs to be redirected towards the board. If you are going to be in the position of school board president, better be able to take the heat (read opinions from the community and those whom elected you) for any decisions made.

Robin Crossan, SSSD board president will not send her son to the public high school. If she gets her way with Knezevich's outing, will she continue to bash the school she took an oath to support? Will her son leave Whiteman and go to the high school? Sorry Robin, I don't get your thinking that you are on the school board, as president, yet you will not send your own child to our high school. You have HATED our school district since you arrived here, and now you are in a position to really show the public your true identity. Parents, teachers, students and the Steamboat Springs Community, do not trust this woman. She will stab you in the back the minute she gets the chance if you go against her controlling wishes.
Others that have disliked Knezevich have children leaving the district. Why do you continue to rail on this man who has proven to make changes?
My heart goes out to two amazing educators, Mike and Katie Knezevich. They could have stayed and had a great legacy here in Steamboat Springs. Instead, the malice of a few are disintegrating the morale, the ethic and the spirit of our educational system.
When does the public tell a brain surgeon how to do their job? Why are non-educators, these control freaks of the board, allowed to micromanage our schools? Let teachers teach and administrators support the education of our students. That's what they are trained for.

I just want to remind everyone that the first two people on the scene to help this guy were two soldiers running in full gear. They were the first to respond from behind his position in the race. As a witness to this, I would like to personally thank the soldiers who stopped short of the finish line to help him.
All involved are to be commended. I didn't want the sails to be knocked out of two fine men who also helped.

I find it unfair to Mike Knezevich, the parents, coaches students and teachers to not renew his contract. If they do not renew June 9th the scramble for him to find a new job and the high school to find a new principal sets up a summer of stress.
Mike is a man of integrity and principal; he knows how to set goals and act upon change. Perhaps communication is the key amongst everyone involved, faculty included.
Does Knezevich get evaluated from staff via a principal's survey? Perhaps a forum for the staff to express their concerns and offer suggestions would facilitate cohesion.
Are policies in place to help him evaluate staff fairly without a feeling of retribution or repercussion? How does he try to implement a new program without the funding of the district?
It seems that he needs more support from the superintendent and the framework (e.g. policies, board withdrawal from micromanagement of schools, open communication between staff members and administration….)
Now we have to convince Mike and Katie Knezevich that it is worth staying. Would you blame them?
Crossan and Anderson need to back off of their personal agendas and work on positive change, not radical ax jobs that will produce horrific results.

Another example of ultra micromanagement by the board. If Knezevich's performance was lackluster, then a plan for his improvement should be devised between Mr. Knezevich and Dr. Smyser as stated in the article. She is his supervisor, and though she is leaving (do you blame her?), I am certain she holds the best interest of the staff and students to heart.
However, Mr. Knezevich may not want to stay in a district that scathes change, that allows decisions to be made by irrational parents and board members, and berates educators so frequently without looking at the big picture.
How much is this going to cost? If the new board members want to represent the taxpayers so much, stop making irrational decisions based on your personal agendas and not sound common sense.

No thanks to the current board for not continuing Smyser's contract. I really appreciated Smyser's demeanor and gracious candor in school board meetings.
The great one got away.

It isn't the education that gets me; it is the timing of all of this. It seems so rushed and hurried despite construction and space issues. So my stance may seem unfair to the parents who have children starting kindergarten for the 08-09 school year…what about the kids who are already in a crowded school and now will have to take music on the stage at SPE or kindergarten children at SCE going outside to walk to the building for restroom facilities?
I still say wait until 09-10 to take the time to plan it well and to look at the space needs of all elementary students in our district.

Mike Knezevich has too much class and integrity to remain in a Steamboat Springs School District position. So many reactive decisions result in a melee of problems later on….
I suggest the current board review the decision-making process, listen to their professionals in the trenches and take some leadership training. (Hmm, sounds like what Mike Knezevich has promoted for his own professional development and that of his staff for the past 9 years…….)
