On Tuesday, hikers reported finding a deceased male, who had been reported as overdue in Boulder County that same day. The body was found in the Lone Eagle Peak area in Grand County. Multiple agencies worked together on recovery efforts in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, located within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, which concluded Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Grand County Dispatch received a report of an overdue climber said to be in the Lone Eagle Peak area, located in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, according to the press release from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office. That same morning, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office had received a missing person report for an overdue party also said to be in the Indian Peaks Wilderness.

Grand County Search and Rescue began search operations, while the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office also undertook search efforts.

The reporting party gave authorities details regarding the planned route and revealed that it seemed to take place primarily in Grand County. The route was said to go from Brainard Lake to Pawnee Pass, to Crater Lake, up Lone Eagle Peak, and then across to Apache Peak and back to Brainard Lake in Boulder County.

That same day, hikers reported finding a deceased male near Lone Eagle Peak at 12:15 p.m.

A Flight for Life helicopter assisted search and rescue members by transporting them to the area. The victim was located 8 miles into the Indian Peaks Wilderness and found on technical terrain.

According to the press release, a ground-based recovery would’ve been extremely dangerous and time-consuming.

At 3 p.m., search and rescue efforts were suspended due to weather and access issues.

Operations resumed on Wednesday at 6 a.m. Other agencies joined to assist Grand County Search and Rescue, including Colorado Search and Rescue State Coordinators, and a Colorado Division of Fire Protection and Control Helitack crew from Canon City.

Four Rocky Mountain Rescue Group technical rope specialists from Boulder were transported by the helitack crew to recover the body.

By around 1 p.m. Wednesday, crews were able to recover and transport the deceased male to the Grand County Coroner.

The identity of the male and his cause of death has not yet been released by the coroner’s office.
