CDOT to host open houses on proposed mountain rail project

The Colorado Department of Transportation will seek public comment on a proposed passenger rail between Denver and Craig during three open house events next week.

The project, a priority of Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and state lawmakers, would extend the current rail line from Denver to Winter Park further to Steamboat Springs, Hayden and Craig.

The state legislature this year passed Senate Bill 184, which creates an initial funding source for the initiative by imposing a $3 per day fee on all rental cars beginning in 2025. The remaining funding will likely need to come from federal grants, with Polis and state legislators hoping to secure dollars from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed by Congress in 2021.

To present information and garner feedback on the project, CDOT plans to hold the following three open house events at the following locations and times:

  • The Center of Craig community center in Craig, located at 601 Yampa Ave., from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 10
  • East Grand Middle School in Granby, located at 251 W. Diamond Ave., from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 11
  • Oberon Middle School in Arvada, located at 7300 Quail St., from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 12
