Steamboat man ruled competent to stand trial

A Routt County judge ordered charges in four separate cases against a Steamboat Springs man to proceed after accepting the findings of a second competency evaluation.

Daniel Domin, 38, of Steamboat Springs, is facing felony and misdemeanor charges linked to four different cases and is currently being held in Routt County Jail on a combined $610,000 bond over the charges.

The cases are linked to Domin’s arrest Dec. 22 after he was charged with felony arson for allegedly setting his neighbor’s car on fire; an arrest the following week after he violated a protection order for contacting the same neighbor; an arrest two days later stemming from a standoff with Steamboat Springs police on New Year’s Eve; and alleged probation violations connected to a plea deal linked to a stalking case settled in February 2023.

An initial competency evaluation ordered by the court in January found Domin competent to face the charges against him before Judge Erin Wilson ordered a second evaluation be conducted at the request of Domin’s defense attorney.

The results of the second evaluation, conducted by Colorado Springs based psychologist, Dr. Jackie Grimmett, also deemed Domin competent to face trial.

Reporting the results of Grimmett’s evaluation Monday, Judge Erin Wilson said, “based on the fact that neither party is objecting or requesting a hearing on the issue of competency and that both reports determine that in the evaluators’ opinion that Mr. Domin is competent to proceed.”

After lifting the stay of execution on Domin’s charges, Wilson asked the defendant if he wished to waive his right for a preliminary hearing in his most recent case.

Domin accepted, a decision allowing for all the felony charges against him to be combined into a single case docket to be adjudicated before facing the misdemeanor charges associated with his four cases.

Domin appeared in court virtually on Monday from Routt County Jail. Wilson granted a request from Public Defender Abby Kurtz-Phelan that her client appear in person at his next court appearance scheduled for July 10.
