A flood watch is in effect Sunday for Northwest Colorado with “ample monsoon moisture” expected to fuel rounds of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

A weather bulletin from the weather service’s office in Grand Junction said showers and storms will be “capable of producing periods of moderate to heavy rain as well as gusty winds, lightning and small hail.”

A map produced in a bulletin shows flood watches in effect from 2-10 p.m. for all of Moffat County and some areas of Routt County near Hayden.

The alert area also includes large swaths of Rio Blanco and Garfield Counties that include Rangley, Meeker and Rifle; along with areas along the Interstate 70 corridor including Grand Junction and Rifle, Eagle, Vail and Aspen.

According to the weather service, the storms will include “numerous to widespread showers and thunderstorms” and will be capable of producing periods of moderate to heavy rain in addition to gusty winds, lightning and small hail and flooding and flash flooding is possible.

The Sunday weather bulletin says, “flash flooding and debris flows (are) possible over major burn scars due to widespread, heavy rainfall,” and that storms are expected to “flourish” in the early afternoon followed by a possible line of “strong thunderstorms” in the evening.
