Guest Column: Uplifting women in business for Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, and for the Steamboat Springs Chamber, that means celebrating the women shaping our local economy. Women-owned and women-led businesses are vital to Routt County’s success, driving innovation, creating jobs, and strengthening our community year-round.

At the Chamber, supporting women in business isn’t a once-a-year initiative, it’s a priority woven into our work. We foster connections through networking events, business development programs, and leadership opportunities that bring women together across industries.

From finance to wellness, hospitality to outdoor recreation, women-owned and women-led businesses are driving growth, cultivating creativity, and strengthening our local economy. These women are not only running successful enterprises but also creating opportunities for others, mentoring future leaders, and giving back to the community in meaningful ways.

We ensure women’s voices are represented at decision-making tables, including our Chamber Board of Directors and committees. Leaders like Sarah Fox of Fox Construction, Jennifer Grathwohl of Grathwohl Creative, Kathy Diemer of Johnny B Good’s, and Kathy Elliott of Christy Sports, who also serves as President of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Board, bring diverse perspectives and strengthen our region’s business environment.

We also spotlight outstanding women in our community, such as this year’s Women on a Mission honorees: Alexa Taylor, an artist and emerging leader at Har Mishpacha; Maren Franciosi, Sr. Communications Manager at Steamboat Resort and board member of the Yampa Valley Community Foundation; and Meg Tully, Executive Director at Steamboat Tennis & Pickleball with over 30 years of nonprofit management. Their work enriches our economy and enhances the character of Steamboat Springs.

Beyond visibility, we invest in leadership development. Our Women’s Leadership Summit and Thrive Together Luncheon Series provide platforms for learning, networking, and growth. Women looking to expand their influence can also engage with our other summits, including the Economic Summit and Empower Yampa Valley Summit.

Diverse leadership isn’t just good for representation, it’s good for business. Studies consistently show that diverse leadership teams drive better decision-making, improve financial performance, and foster more innovative solutions.

Women bring unique perspectives, collaborative leadership styles, and a strong focus on relationship-building, all of which contribute to resilient and adaptive businesses. When women are included in leadership and decision-making roles, businesses benefit from a broader range of ideas, deeper customer insights, and a workplace culture that supports diverse talent.

To the women leading, innovating, and making a difference in Steamboat Springs, thank you. Your work inspires us all. Let’s continue to support, celebrate, and uplift one another as we work toward an even stronger, more vibrant Steamboat Springs. The Chamber is here to champion your success, and together, we’re building an even stronger business community.
