Nonprofit environmental education organization Yampatika, which is part of the Keep It Clean partnership in Colorado, is asking residents and maintenance workers to be mindful of how much and where ice melt product is used during the freeze/thaw cycles this spring.

Keep It Clean notes that “too much de-icer in water leads to lower oxygen levels and heavy metal contamination.”

The organization asks residents and workers to avoid putting ice melt on unpaved surfaces because it can seep into the soil and contaminate groundwater.

“Like fertilizer, apply the minimum amount it will take to get the job done,” according to Keep It Clean. More information is available at KeepitCleanpartnership.org.
