Letter to the Editor: Unconscious at the bar

Thank you for bringing to light the drink-spiking problem in Steamboat. I was a victim of this as well, at another live music venue, not the one mentioned in the Steamboat Pilot & Today earlier this week.

I am hesitant to mention the business, because I do not feel that the company was responsible for any of the maliciousness. Long story short: We went out on a Friday to watch a show, after my second drink, I was unconscious at the bar.

Thankfully, my husband was with me. Knowing that this was not the norm for me, he called the ambulance. I have no memory of anything, until I woke up at the hospital. I was told that this is a common occurrence in Steamboat. I was told that what is usually slipped into the drink is not easily detected unless the drink itself can be tested.

I would like to say, I was very well taken care of at UCHealth. I have no health insurance, so I now have a large hospital bill. I do not qualify for any assistance and UCHealth has zero prompt pay discounts. I have no recollection of who may have spiked my drink, which makes me responsible for this debt. I would like to stress to all the Steamboat ladies, be very aware of your drink.

Watch it from the time you order it to the time you have it in your hand. Take it with you to the bathroom. You have to be your own advocate. Oh, and don’t think you are “too old” or “with your husband”. I am both, and still a victim.
