Longtime local skier, business owner dies in accident at Steamboat Resort

A longtime local skier and business owner died Tuesday morning in a skiing accident at Steamboat Resort, according to Routt County Coroner Mitch Locke.

Peter Van De Carr, 70, of Steamboat Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:46 a.m. Tuesday. According to Locke, the next of kin has been notified.

The cause of death has not yet been released.



According to Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherar, another skier found Van De Carr buried and unresponsive in a “bunch” of snow.

According to Locke, Van De Carr was not in a tree well.



Scherar added that the investigation is ongoing and deputies are working closely with ski patrol to file a report.

Van De Carr owns the popular business Backdoor Sports on Yampa Street.

“Steamboat Resort can confirm the passing of a beloved community member yesterday at the resort in Mahogany Ridge. Our hearts are broken for his family and friends – many of whom are part of the Steamboat Resort team,” said Maren Franciosi, Senior Communications Manager at Steamboat Resort. “Our focus is providing space for grieving this heavy loss to our community and supporting our staff as they navigate through this.”
