Man dies after off-road vehicle flips into water in West Routt

A West Routt County resident died Wednesday afternoon after the off-road highway vehicle he was driving was discovered upside down and submerged in water on a property near Routt County Road 29 in the Pagoda area.

According to emergency dispatch communications, the vehicle referred to as an OHV had reportedly been submerged for approximately 1-2 hours before first responders reached the scene.

The man, who authorities believed to be in his 80s, was pronounced deceased at 12:24 p.m. Wednesday after emergency personnel performed an extrication, as well as CPR and life-saving procedures for roughly 40 minutes, according to the emergency radio traffic.



Multiple agencies responded to the incident with Hayden police and West Routt Fire arriving first at the scene.

First responders from Moffat County including Craig Fire and the Routt County Sheriff’s Office also responded along with a Classic Air Medical crew that arrived by helicopter and assisted with the resuscitation attempts.



The property where the incident occurred is in a remote section of unincorporated Routt County south of Hayden and southeast of Craig near the Pagoda neighborhood.
