Moffat County deputies arrest previous offender for alleged traffic offenses and weapon possession

The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Friday for allegedly speeding on a motorcycle under a revoked license, possessing a weapon as a previous offender and obstructing a deputy, according to an arrest affidavit.

Steven Tamlin, 58, was arrested around noon in Craig on Friday and was charged with possession of a weapon by a previous offender, vehicular eluding, obstruction of a peace officer, driving under a revoked license as a habitual traffic offender and two other traffic-related offenses.

According to the affidavit, a Moffat County Sheriff’s Office deputy and Undersheriff Chip McIntyre, while in an unmarked patrol vehicle, saw a motorcycle traveling east on 10th Street in Craig at a “high rate of speed.”

The affidavit states that the sheriff’s deputy “recognized the driver” as Tamlin, whom he was familiar with from previous arrests. The deputy was aware that Tamlin’s license was revoked for being a “habitual” traffic offender and that he had “attempted to elude law enforcement numerous times in the past.”

According to criminal history documents provided by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Tamlin has been arrested 77 times in Colorado. Of those arrests, 66 were made by the Craig Police Department and Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.

Since his first arrest in 1986 in Craig, Tamlin has been arrested for charges including: alleged assault, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, vehicular eluding, parole violations, criminal mischief, drug use and possession, probation violations, obstructing justice, child abuse, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, burglary, domestic violence, violating a protection order, theft, harassment, numerous traffic violations and consistently failing to appear in court.

According to the affidavit, when the deputy turned on his emergency lights to pursue Tamlin on Friday, Tamlin allegedly began to accelerate and drive away.

The deputy states in the affidavit, “I did not look down at my speedometer at the time due to focusing on the pursuit. However, I estimate that I was traveling around 50-60 mph in an attempt to catch up to (Tamlin).”

The affidavit adds that Tamlin was pulled over “a short time later” at the intersection of 10th Street and Shepherd Drive, which is a residential area where the speed limit is 30 mph.

The deputy then saw “what appeared to be a large fixed-blade knife on the front of (Tamlin’s) motorcycle” and “believed that he was not allowed to possess the knife.”

Tamlin provided the deputy with a Colorado State Identification Card after allegedly “almost” giving him an ID “belonging to someone else,” states the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Tamlin got upset and “aggressive” after speaking to the undersheriff and began cursing at him.

Tamlin “aggressively threw his hands behind his back” to be handcuffed, then “began pulling away” from the deputy, states the affidavit.

After he was handcuffed, Tamlin allegedly continued to yell and pull away from the deputy, as well as curse at the undersheriff.

According to the affidavit, Tamlin has “multiple” convictions that prohibit him from possessing a weapon, including a conviction in 2020 after being arrested by the Craig Police Department for weapon possession.

Tamlin also has a 2009 conviction in Kit Carson County for felony menacing with a weapon and a 2007 conviction in Moffat County for felony assault causing serious bodily injury.

The affidavit further states that the deputy later received confirmation from the state of Colorado that Tamlin’s license is revoked from April 2023 to April 2028.

According to the Moffat County Combined Courts clerk’s office, Tamlin was released from Moffat County Jail on Saturday on a $300 bond.

According to Moffat County Jail booking sheets, Tamlin was arrested again on Monday for allegedly violating a protection order and drug possession.

Tamlin’s bond for Monday’s arrest is set at $500. He is currently in custody at the Moffat County Jail and is scheduled to next appear in court for this case at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

His next court appearance for the case involving allegedly driving under a revoked license and possessing a weapon is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. April 24.
