Oak Creek Labor Day celebration begins Friday evening

Can you dig it? That is the theme for Oak Creek’s Labor Day celebration this year.

The longtime tradition of honoring workers on Labor Day in Oak Creek began in 1913, a year when coal miners wanted to show unity among workers and their unions, according to the Trails and Tracks Museum.

This year, the tradition kicks off Friday with some live music at Franciosi Brothers with Benny & Taylor’s Honkeytonk Express taking the stage from 6 to 9 p.m. and Jane Blake Sings Jazz & Country performing at Oak Creek Tavern starting at 8:30 p.m.

A full slate of events on Saturday begins with the pancake breakfast at Main Street Park at 8 a.m. followed by a choice of competitions from the Shirley Montieth Annual Cribbage Tournament at Oak Creek Tavern at 10:30 a.m., the Fishing Derby at Decker Park and Chicken Sh!t Bingo at 11 a.m.

Dueling D’s BBQ & Grill and Lucky 8’s will be hosting a free sliders session at the Main Street restaurant at noon. Just up the street, Sasha’s Gourmet Goods will throw a two-year anniversary birthday bash from noon to 5 p.m.

The weekend’s grand marshal presentation and live auction kick off at 3 p.m. In the evening, SoulBots will take the stage at Oak Creek Tavern.

Sunday’s schedule beings with free museums tours offered by the Tracks and Trails Museum at Foidel School at 10 a.m. followed by a mine tour at noon. Guest speakers will present at the Tracks and Trails Museum from 5 to 8 p.m.

Lupita’s Cantina will host live music with Fayuca performing from 2 to 5 p.m. and movie night at Decker Park begins at dusk.

The Labor Day pancake breakfast at Main Street Park begins at 8 a.m. For those wishing to participate in the No Fun Run, registration begins at 8 a.m. at Town Hall and the race sets off at 10 a.m.

The parade line-up starts at 10 a.m. at Soroco High School before the procession begins on Main Street at 11 a.m. Following the parade, games will be posted in Decker Park and bingo will take place at the fire station from 1 to 5 p.m.

Joel Martin’s Vintage Soundz will begin performing at Oak Creek Tavern at 2 p.m.
