The Steamboat Springs boys soccer team’s focus this season revolves around organization.

Head coach Rob Bohlmann wants to see cohesion from his players and have them play the way the team needs them to play. Communication and composure pose a big role in that, which is something he was happy to see when the Sailors defeated Vail Mountain 3-2 Thursday night.

The victory brings Steamboat back to an even 3-3 record while sitting at 2-1 in league play. Following the game, Bohlmann was pleased with how Steamboat performed in just its second home game of the season.

“Results aside, we are on a really good trajectory,” Bohlmann said. “The identity of this team is they work so hard and they compete. Tonight was a reward because they were very organized and stuck to how we mapped out what we had seen from the opponent with the scouting report. It created opportunities to really be dangerous.”

Steamboat had several scoring chances throughout the 80-minute contest, ripping nine shots on goal including four off the foot of senior Jeffrey Sturges. One of those shots accounted for Steamboat’s first goal of the game, pitting the Sailors in a 1-1 tie at halftime.

Out of the half, Bohlmann’s message to the players was keeping composure for the final 40 minutes and dictating the play of the visiting Gore Rangers.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Connor Hull gave Steamboat the lead with a goal on a rebound.

“My teammate was trying to flick it backward to me but it deflected through,” Hull explained. “My other teammate, Matthias (Wolf), shot it on net and it trickled out right there in front of me. I had a nice, easy tap in. It was real nice to put us in the lead and bring us that energy in the second half.”

Though Vail Mountain managed to tie things back up, Sailors junior Henry Jamison closed the game, netting the ball from over 40 yards out on a direct kick with minutes left on the game clock.

“There was a lot of maturity tonight where our team really played with the ball and against the ball in a very organized fashion,” Bohlmann said.

Next up for Steamboat is a road game against Battle Mountain on Saturday morning.
