The Rams, Tigers and Sailors track and field teams hit the road over the weekend, collecting a number of podium places and state qualifying results.

Soroco kicked off the weekend at All-City Stadium in Denver for the Thomas Jefferson Twilight meet on Friday. Senior Joanna Almeida captured a meet victory in the 100-meter hurdles race, crossing the finish line with a blazing time of 16.98 seconds.

Alayna Edwards and Ava Elshere also shined in the pole vault for the Rams, jumping their way to third- and fifth-place finishes, respectively.

For the Soroco boys it was Nick Clark who made his mark, taking eighth in the mile run and sixth in the 2-mile.

The Tigers and Sailors competed Saturday, each traveling to Glenwood Springs for the Demon Invitational.

Steamboat’s Della Cunningham made noise in the jumping pit, taking her triple jump to 32 feet, 10 inches for first place. Hayden’s Ella Harris was not far behind with a second-place jump at 32 feet, 8.5 inches.

Ayla Oslowski completed a full lap around the track in just over a minute to secure first place in the 400-meter dash. She was also the anchor of Steamboat’s 4×400 meter relay team that took first with a time of 4:11.85, around 2 seconds off the Steamboat Springs High School record.

Steamboat’s Janie Gonzales produced powerful throws of the discus to a second-place finish (100-1) and the shot put to fourth place (29-9.5).

For the Steamboat boys, Austin Prost continued his wizardry over the hurdles this season by collecting first in the 300-meter hurdle event as well as second in 110-meter hurdles.

Brandon Kolb’s high-jumping skills continue to impress as he took the gold medal in Saturday’s event reaching 6-2. He also placed third in long jump, flying horizontally for 19 feet and 3 inches. Asher Rowan’s 4:36.05 time in the mile run was good for second.

Next up for the Tigers is the Warrior Wild West Invitational on Friday in Grand Junction. The Rams will be at the Coal Ridge Invitational on Friday in New Castle. The Sailors will be back on the track and field in early May following spring break.

Steamboat Springs senior Brandon Kolb, pictured here at the 2023 state championships in Denver, won the high jump event at the Demons Invitational on Saturday in Glenwood Springs. He leapt over a 6 foot, 2 inch pole.
