Red flag fire weather warning issued for Routt County on Sunday

A red flag fire weather warning was issued for Routt County on Sunday.

The county’s emergency dispatch communications center announced the alert at approximately 2 p.m. with a note of “dry thunderstorms and gusty outflow wind” expected.

The warning issued for the Routt County area was one of 11 issued for fire districts stretching from Northwest Colorado to eastern Utah on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

A red flag warning comes with critical fire conditions that are either occurring or expected to occur. The conditions that prompt the warning come with a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures that can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

According to the weather service, conditions in the county Sunday afternoon and evening are expected to be “favorable for lightning-induced ignitions from dry thunderstorms” with “scattered thunderstorms after a long period of dry conditions and near-record temperatures.”

Outflow winds refer to “erratic winds with gusts in excess of 50 mph” and are possible with the forecasted thunderstorm system approaching the area, the National Weather Service said in a bulletin.

Temperatures in Steamboat Springs hovered around 90 degrees Fahrenheit at the time the red flag warning was issued Sunday afternoon, capping off a hot weekend marked by temperatures well above the area’s average 83 degree Fahrenheit average.
