Routt County pursues federal funds for airport, highway and emergency communication upgrades
Routt County submitted three funding requests through the Congressionally Directed Spending program on Monday, which allows congressional representatives to advocate for specific projects in their respective states, with eligibility extended to state and local government entities in recent years.
The county requested $3.4 million to contribute to a $75 million terminal expansion project at Yampa Valley Regional Airport, aiming to serve increasing air travel demands, enhance passenger facilities and boost regional economic growth and tourism.
County commissioners are also seeking $3 million to install a safe crossing at Brandon Circle on U.S. Highway 40 west of town, to address safety issues and improve traffic flow, benefiting both residents and visitors.
Lastly, the Routt County Communications Department asked for $2 million to replace 360 outdated radios, which are crucial for maintaining effective communication between first responders and emergency personnel during critical situations.
Proposals were submitted to the offices of U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, who will individually review and submit the applications to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
The applications target projects that will be ready for implementation next year. Funding decisions will be announced in spring 2026.
