The Self-Defense Program for Women at Old Town Hot Springs is open to the public and has expanded with the addition of new crash mats to allow classes with up to 16 participants.

The next six-week class starts March 24 and runs through April 28. Classes are scheduled for 6:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays, and the cost is $75 for OTHS members and $90 for non-members. The class is open to women 14 and older, or 12 and older with a parent participating.

The class is taught by Lindsay Heideman, a blue belt and student of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting and submission holds. The class is helpful for women to learn how to use leverage and momentum to their advantage to protect themselves and get away from a threatening situation.

Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs also offers one-night, non-credit workshop classes for Self-Defense for Women taught by Chris Carbone. That classes will be offered again on April 9 and April 16 for $29.
