Steamboat boys golf closes season with 11th at regional tournament

After driving the ball to just in front of the green, Steamboat Springs golfer Jack Fisher chips his ball up to the pin during a practice Friday, Aug. 4, 2023. Fisher, now a senior, competed in the 3A Region Four tournament for a second consecutive year, taking 27th for the Sailors on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024.

At the start of the season, Steamboat Springs boys golf coach Josh Dunahoe wanted the Sailors to focus on team performance over individual success.

Sending four to the regional tournament Monday, the team had the opportunity to test itself against some of the top 3A squads in the state at the Snowmass Club in Snowmass Village.

Up against 10 other schools in 3A Region 4, Steamboat Springs sent its top four golfers from the regular season — seniors Jack Fisher and Alex Johnson as well as juniors Arran Flam and Gabriel Glomboske.

Fisher led the way for the Sailors at regionals with six pars in his 18-hole round. He parred three on the front nine and three on the back nine for an 89 and 27th overall in the tournament.

Fisher was the only Sailor to return to the regional tournament from last season when he took 55th place after shooting a 96 at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction.

Just behind Fisher was Johnson, who shot a 93 for 34th place. Glomboske and Flam rounded out the Steamboat scoring, shooting a 96 and 98 for 40th and 41st place, respectively.

Glomboske’s highlight from the round came on the elevated tee box of the 8th hole. Sitting 200 yards away, he found the bottom of the cup in two strokes for his lone birdie of the round.

Johnson also managed a birdie in his round, carding a two on the par-three 13th hole, which can intimidate players with a creek running just yards away from the green on the left side.

Like Fisher, Flam also saw six total pars in his round. He started hot with four pars in the first seven holes and closed out his round with a par as well.

Steamboat finished 11th overall after shooting 278 as a team while Aspen took the regional championship. In 27th place, Fisher narrowly missed an individual qualification for state, which takes the top 21 golfers from each of the four regions.
