Steamboat boys soccer celebrates 11 at senior night
Gardner Field played host to the celebration of 11 seniors Tuesday night during the Steamboat Springs Sailors boys soccer game against Glenwood Springs.
Entering the game with an even record, the Sailors left the game still even following a 2-2 tie resulting in a 6-6-2 regular season record and just one game remaining to tip the scales in either direction.
Steamboat head coach Rob Bohlman made the decision to pack the field with seniors at the start of the game which Campbell McLaren, senior, described as a special moment.
“All the seniors are what really bring us together,” he explained. “Starting the game that way and bringing the high tides and positive energy helped us travel through the game.”
The Demons were first to score in the 17th minute of the match, putting early pressure on the Sailors who seemed to have no trouble earning scoring chances offensively.
One of those chances finally paid off for Steamboat 29 minutes into the game when sophomore Kane Morris netted a ball off a rebound from a defended corner kick.
“We scored our first goal in a pretty chaotic way,” said junior goalkeeper Will Hall. “It bobbled around in there and then our sophomore, Kane, hit it in. We thrive off of that energy and try to stimulate that.”
Coming out of halftime knotted at 1 apiece, the Sailors made a point to be aggressive early and find a way to score.
“Our thing is first 10,” Hall said. “We want to win those first 10 minutes, score early and then we’ll be set up for success. We have been focusing on starting strong in the second half, move the ball and play our game.”
The strategy worked for the Sailors when Henry Jamison kicked a floater over the defenders’ heads and into the back of the net for a Steamboat lead.
Hall and the Steamboat defense remained tough for the remainder of the game, saving several close free kicks from the Demons, but ultimately Glenwood would find the net one last time in the 73rd minute to tie things up.
A last minute hail mary down the field from Hall left the Steamboat attack with an opportunity to score but the shot went just high and wide of the goal.
Now 6-6-2 on the year, Steamboat could break out from the .500 record and finish in the positive with a win in the final regular season game of the season against Bruce Randolph on Saturday.
“We want to control what we can — the energy at practice and how hard we work — that is all we can control and we plan to do that,” Hall said.
