Steamboat man with troubled past suspected of torching pickup truck in condo parking lot

Daniel Domin struck a plea deal on Feb. 3 that consolidated 13 felony stalking charges into a single charge. Domin is now accused of arson and other charges related to a Dec. 22 incident at a local condo complex.

A Steamboat Springs man with a history of run-ins with law enforcement is facing charges for allegedly setting a neighbor’s pickup truck on fire in the parking lot of a local condominium complex.

Daniel Domin, 38, was charged with second-degree arson, fourth-degree arson, first-degree trespassing and committing a bias-motivated crime in relationship to the vehicle fire that occurred mid-afternoon Dec. 22. As of Thursday, Domin remained in custody at the Routt County Jail on a $25,000 bond.

Multiple residents of the condominium complex at 1395 Sparta Plaza reported the vehicle fire. Local law-enforcement personnel responded to the calls at 3:16 p.m. and found a green 2021 Toyota Tacoma smoldering in the parking lot.

According to the arrest affidavit, the fire department had extinguished the flames and was continuing to work on the smoldering hotspots. The truck interior had been fully engulfed, destroying the interior and causing major damage to the exterior of the vehicle.

The affidavit says that Domin was on scene when police arrived and issued conflicting statements to officers as to whether he had started the fire. According to the affidavit, Domin mentioned that a past brain injury and multiple medications he takes may have contributed to confusion on his part.

The affidavit also says Domin told police the owner of the pickup truck is someone he knows from past military service, and Domin allegedly made multiple homophobic comments about what he perceived to be the individual’s sexual orientation.

The truck was set ablaze in a parking lot surrounded on three sides by condo buildings, with the nearest structure being only about 15 feet from the burned pickup truck. Multiple residents retrieved their pets from their residences out of fear that their building might catch fire, according to the affidavit.

In court proceedings earlier this year, Domin faced 13 counts of felony stalking. He struck a plea deal and admitted his guilt to one count of stalking on Feb. 3 in Routt County Court. The count of stalking to which Domin pleaded guilty involved eight victims.

Domin previously had been arrested on July 13, 2022, during which time the Steamboat Springs Police Department confiscated 13 guns, including four AR-15s, seven handguns and two shotguns, as well as thousands of rounds of ammunition, although none of the weapons were used in any of the alleged stalking crimes, according to the prosecution.

Local police worked alongside the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service following numerous alleged threats made against friends, family members, politicians and law enforcement.
