The Steamboat Pilot & Today has added a new reporter to the newsroom in Emma Pilger, who will cover the public safety beats in Routt and Moffat counties as well as general assignment stories.

“I am so excited to have Emma on our team,” Editor Eli Pace said. “She comes to Steamboat with a history of excellence and a deep passion. I believe readers of the Steamboat Pilot and Craig Press are really going to enjoy seeing her work on a regular basis.”

Pilger graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in March 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in writing. She also served as the chief copyeditor for her college newspaper, District, where she led the copyediting team and collaborated with fellow editors to produce a literary arts magazine.

Additionally, Pilger has experience working as a content and media assistant and as a freelance writer for the Food Republic. Pilger also made the dean’s list every year she was in college and finished magna cum laude with a 4.0 grade-point average.

Upon graduation, Pilger set her sights on moving to Steamboat Springs, an area she knows well.

“I grew up coming here since I was about 3 years old,” Pilger recalled. “I grew up in ski school here, and (my family and I) have been coming here summer, fall, winter every year.”

As an avid skier from a young age, Pilger has been lucky to experience many of Colorado’s most well-known ski areas and resorts, but for her at least, Steamboat is simply special.

“I’ve been skiing in Colorado my entire life, but I just fell in love with Steamboat mountain the most,” said Pilger, who grew up in Woodland Park. “I know this mountain like the back of my hand. It is seriously like home. You could place me anywhere on the mountain and I would know where I am.”

In addition to skiing, Pilger enjoys cooking, reading and anything that gets her outside. If there’s one thing Pilger said she hopes readers know about her, it’s that she’s here to build community through her reporting.

“I’m here to support the community,” Pilger said. “It doesn’t necessarily even matter to me that the community knows who I am. I want to be a resource for the community. I want to be supportive of all the things that are happening here. I just want to be someone who is supporting the community in any way I can.”
