Despite reaching roughly 75% of its targeted funding goal, the Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex announced it will undergo renovation efforts on the tennis center beginning in July.

The complex, which is run by the nonprofit Court Sports 4 Life, launched the Courting Love campaign in 2023 with hopes of updating its tennis center to the same standard of its newly constructed pickleball facility.

The campaign’s original goal was approximately $2 million which came down to $1.82 million for phase one of the project after value-engineering options were explored.

To date, approximately $1.38 million has been raised for the project — including $500,000 from the City of Steamboat Springs — but a roughly $450,000 funding gap remains.

Project improvements in phase one include replacing the exterior Tennis Center membrane and insulation, which was installed in 2005, as well as lighting replacement and painting the exterior of the building.

Phase two, which includes court resurfacing and welcome center improvements, will be delayed until the targeted funding has been reached. The complex stated that preliminary plans for phase two are currently in the works.

“We are humbled by the overwhelming support of the Steamboat Springs community to make renovating the tennis center a reality in 2025,” said the complex’s executive director, Meg Tully. “While we still face a funding gap to complete the full renovation, we believe that investing in the project this year is a fiscal decision that will save dollars in the long run.”

“We are very excited for the lifelong sport of tennis in Steamboat Springs, and we hope that our generous community will continue to donate towards this special community asset,” she added.

The complex is under contract with Pillar Contracting Inc., based in Oklahoma City, for renovations in phase one of the project. Their crews will begin work in July, but the tennis center will remain open during construction with a ‘partial impact on indoor operations’ in August and September.

With about 25% of fundraising still to go, the complex will continue its Courting Love campaign. An anonymous donor has placed a $100,000 double-your-impact match, meaning every dollar donated for the next $100,000 will be doubled.

“The Tennis Center has served the Steamboat Springs community for over 30 years and has been designated a Premier Facility by the United States Tennis Association consecutively for three years, despite its dire need for repair,” said Jason Scicchitano, director of tennis at the center.

“Our ongoing Premier Facility designation is a testament to our reputation as a leading nonprofit public sports complex nationwide, and I am proud to call this facility home,” he added.
