Steamboat Springs police received an anonymous Safe2Tell tip around 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, reporting that a student at Steamboat Springs High School had a gun.

Law enforcement investigated the report and corresponded with school staff to sequester the student. After investigation, no credible threat was found and police left the scene.

However, a second Safe2Tell tip was reported around 2 p.m. containing a potential photo of the same student possessing a gun, according to emergency radio traffic.

Steamboat Springs High School went under lockdown at 2:06 p.m., according to the Steamboat Springs School District.

Upon the second tip, police immediately returned to the school to look for the student. Police searched a number of places and were able to track him down at an apartment complex in Steamboat Springs and took the boy into custody.

According to emergency radio traffic, students at the high school assisted law enforcement in finding the suspect using Snapchat.

Steamboat Springs High School lifted the lockdown at 2:45 p.m. Students were released from the school as normal and there were no bus delays, according to the Steamboat Springs School District.

“We’re grateful for our relationship with the Steamboat Springs Police Department,” said Laura Milius, the school district’s director of communications. “They responded swiftly and did a thorough investigation of the area. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.”
