A small section of the Yampa River Core Trail on the south side of the city will close temporarily starting Monday for construction linked to the expansion of the city’s water infiltration gallery.

The trail closure is scheduled to remain through the end of September unless work is completed earlier.

The trail closure is part of an effort by the city to make improvements to its infiltration gallery along the Yampa River. The gallery receives water from the river through alluvial wells and is used as the backup to the primary water collection system. The wells are in need of new electrical and instrumentation conduits.

The closure is located on the south end of the Yampa River Core Trail in an area behind the Steamboat Christian Center. That portion of the trail is accessed by the U.S. Forest Service Office and, due to the nature of the project, there will be no detour options available for recreators.

During the work, heavy construction equipment will cross the trail to access the east back of the Yampa River. The construction will include drilling, testing and the inspection of four new alluvial wells. Inspections will cover casing, well pumps, well meter vaults, electrical panels, pitless adapters, vents and concrete pads around the wells.
