Construction of the long-awaited Yampa River Core Trail extension is expected to begin at the end of May, with preconstruction meetings and activities currently underway, states the city of Steamboat Springs’ most recent newsletter.

A construction contract with Duckels Construction has been finalized and the motion to proceed was issued for the project on April 21.

The Core Trail is expected to be extended from Snow Bowl Plaza to the KOA Campground by the end of the 2026 construction season, while the final section to Sleepy Bear Mobile Home Park and the pedestrian tunnel under U.S. Highway 40 is planned for next year.

City officials said the project will help improve a safe, vehicle-free multimodal route for both pedestrians and cyclists along the highway and connect key West Steamboat neighborhoods.
